Understanding sleep disorders

Sleep Disorder . . . hmmm . . . allow me to explain the different types of sleep disorders.

There are three types of sleep disorders – Sleep Paralysis, 24 – Hour Body Rhythms and Clinical Sleep Disorders. Clinical Sleep Disorders have been further divided into Insomnia, Hypersomnia and Parasomnia.

* Sleep Paralysis: In this disorder, a kind of paralysis occurs when you dream while sleeping. Scientists think that the paralysis is nature's way from preventing you to act out your dream. This creates an inability in you. If you want to run away while facing a nightmare, you would not be able to do that.If this feeling continues even after waking up, then it is called sleep paralysis.

* 24-Hour Body Rhythms: Your body follows the 24-hour clock pattern. Based on this clock, your body changes its temperature, plasma level, etc. You sleep in accordance to your body clock. Working in shifts or traveling across time zones can disturb your sleep patterns.

* Insomnia: Insomnia is a condition when you are unable to get enough sleep. There can be many reasons for this, such as environmental causes that include too much noise, light, etc. Medical problem causes including medications or any secondary medical problem and psychological problems, which are actually the largest contributors to insomnia. Insomnia can also be caused by the Restless Legs Syndrome.

* Hypersomnia: Hypersomnia is a condition when, in spite of sleeping for a good number of hours of sleep at night, you feel sleepy during the day. Hypersomnia can be further divided into Narcolepsy and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

* Parasomnia: Parasomnia covers all those disorders which don't usually affect the quality of sleep but induce strange events during the night. Such events include sleepwalking, talking and night terrors.
