Sleep is very important for our body. Lying in bed and not able to sleep can be very distressing. Lack of sleep adversely affects our physical and emotional health. After a sound sleep a person feels refreshed and rejuvenated. Without sound sleep a person becomes irritated, listless and tired.
Some of the common causes of insomnia are stress, anxiety, depression, late night work, drinking too much coffee or tea, uncomfortable bed, late night shifts and eating late. Sufferers of insomnia usually complain about having difficulty falling asleep and feel sleepy during the day. Insomnia is categorized as being intermittent, chronic and transient.
There are a number of ways by which we can improve our sleep. These ways are a part of better sleep hygiene. Wake up and sleep at the same time everyday. Relax an hour before getting into bed. Listen to calm, soothing music or read a good book. Make sure you get enough sunlight through out the day. Make sure that you sleep on a comfortable bed and that the bed room is dark and cool. Avoid eating large meals, drinking or smoking before your bedtime.
Apart from these steps there are effective remedies, therapies and practices that help to improve sleep. Practices such as acupuncture, hypnosis and reflexology are also effective in fighting insomnia. Drinking a warm cup of milk 20 minutes before sleep also helps. Warm milk helps you to drift into sleep. This is because milk contains amino acids that are converted into sleep-enhancing compounds. The calcium and magnesium content also help to fight insomnia, besides being good for your bones and overall health. Magnesium helps to relax stiff muscles, nerves and optimize blood pressure. It also helps in absorption of calcium. Some of the foods rich in magnesium are seeds, nuts and green leafy vegetables.

Using Valerian, lemon balm and hops also helps to relax mind and body.
